Zizo Bongekile Manona is a South African documentary photographer and visual artist whose work spans documentary photography, graphic design, digital vector art, and illustration.
She deliberately shoots her documentary photography in black and white, both as a method of preservation and as a tribute to the nostalgic tradition of capturing people and places. Her illustrations and street art take a different approach, combining typography and bold imagery with vibrant colour.
Across these different forms, Zizo brings a distinctive eye to people, places, and the stories found in everyday life.

Your Story Matters
You don’t need to travel somewhere extraordinary to make meaningful photographs. Some of the richest stories are already around you. They can be found in your family, friends, neighbourhood, community, and everyday surroundings.
In this private 1-hour documentary photography session, conducted online via Google Meet, you’ll work with South African photographer and visual artist Zizo Bongekile Manona. She’ll help you look closer, photograph people with greater intention, and tell stronger stories through your images.
The session is designed for individuals or small private groups of up to five. It’s suitable for beginners, photography enthusiasts, hobbyists, and more experienced photographers. All you need is a desire to develop your eye and explore documentary and street portrait photography.
What’s Included
Your session includes guidance in documentary and street portrait photography. You’ll explore practical ways to strengthen your visual storytelling and develop your photographic voice.
You’ll also have the opportunity to share your own work with Zizo. She’ll provide personal feedback on your images and help you identify where you could go next.
What You’ll Explore
> Find Your Story
Learn to recognise the stories already unfolding around you. Then, discover how to document the people, places, and everyday moments that catch your eye.
Start where you are. Look closer. From there, build an archive of the world around you.
> See the Portrait
Explore the elements that can transform the way you approach a portrait. For instance, these include composition, light and shadow, contrast, texture, form, backgrounds, environment, and body language.
In turn, these choices can shape an image and what it communicates about the person in front of your camera.
> Develop Your Visual Voice
Discover how your creative choices influence the feeling and meaning of an image. In particular, you’ll explore colour, black and white, light, contrast, composition, environment, and mood.
Over time, the choices you make repeatedly can help you develop a photographic voice that feels like your own.
> Turn Photographs Into Stories
Learn how portraits, environments, details, and interactions can work together to create a visual narrative. A single photograph can capture a powerful moment. A collection of images can reveal a broader story.
> Get Personal Feedback on Your Photography
Bring your own work to the session and receive personal feedback from Zizo. She’ll look at your composition, visual choices, and storytelling. Together, you can explore where your photography could go next.
Each participant can submit up to three photographs through the pre-session questions. Zizo will review them as part of your session.
What You’ll Take Away
Leave with a clearer approach to photographing people and places. You’ll gain a stronger understanding of documentary portraiture and visual storytelling.
The session will give you practical ideas for developing your photography. You’ll also learn to think more carefully about what your images communicate. Personal feedback from Zizo will help guide what you photograph next.
You don’t need to look far for a story. Start with the people and places you already know.
