Trek to Everest Base Camp through the heart of the Himalayas

Two acclimatization days help your body adjust as the route gains altitude. The itinerary also includes an ascent of Kala Patthar, the trek’s highest point at approximately 5,545 metres and one of the clearest viewpoints of Mount Everest.
Experienced local guides and porters support the expedition throughout. Global Shenanigans founder Chris Whittaker also accompanies the group, while the trip price covers accommodation, trekking meals, permits and domestic transportation.

What you will experience
Follow the classic Everest Base Camp route
Begin with a flight to Lukla, then walk through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep. The route passes rivers, suspension bridges, forests, monasteries and settlements shaped by life at high altitude.
Reach Everest Base Camp
Walk beside the Khumbu Glacier to Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 metres. This is the staging ground used by climbing expeditions attempting the world’s highest mountain.
See Everest from Kala Patthar
Everest’s summit is difficult to see from Base Camp itself. Kala Patthar provides the trek’s defining view across the Khumbu Glacier toward Everest, Nuptse, Pumori and the surrounding peaks.
Spend time in Sherpa communities
The trail passes through Namche Bazaar and several smaller mountain settlements. You will encounter Buddhist monasteries, stupas, prayer wheels and the communities that sustain travel through the Khumbu region.
Explore Kathmandu
The expedition includes a guided sightseeing day in Kathmandu before the trek. The itinerary introduces you to the city’s Hindu and Buddhist heritage before you travel into the mountains.
Who this expedition suits
This trek suits experienced walkers and active travellers who can prepare for consecutive days of hiking at altitude. You do not need technical climbing experience, but you should arrive with good cardiovascular fitness, leg strength and confidence walking for several hours on uneven terrain.
Expect cold conditions, basic mountain accommodation, steep ascents and long trekking days. The reduced oxygen above 3,000 metres adds to the physical demand.
A structured training plan should include regular walking, hills or stairs, aerobic exercise and strength work. Training with the boots and daypack you plan to use will help you test your equipment before departure.
Altitude and safety
The route includes acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. These pauses allow time for gradual adjustment before the group climbs higher.
Altitude illness can affect fit and experienced trekkers. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, unusual fatigue, dizziness or disrupted sleep. Tell your guide immediately if symptoms appear. Guides may change the pace, route or itinerary when someone’s health or local conditions require it.
Review the CDC’s guidance on high-altitude travel and altitude illness and speak with a qualified medical professional before booking if you have concerns about altitude, heart or lung health, medication or strenuous exercise.
Your travel insurance should cover trekking to at least 5,545 metres, medical treatment, trip disruption and emergency evacuation. Confirm the policy’s altitude limit in writing.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need climbing experience?
No technical climbing experience is required. This is a high-altitude trek rather than a mountaineering expedition. You still need strong fitness, suitable equipment and the ability to walk for several hours on consecutive days.
How difficult is the Everest Base Camp trek?
The route is physically demanding because of its altitude, cumulative elevation gain, uneven terrain and repeated trekking days. The itinerary includes acclimatization time, but every participant responds to altitude differently.
Can I see Mount Everest from Base Camp?
The view from Everest Base Camp focuses on the Khumbu Glacier, icefall and surrounding peaks. Kala Patthar provides a clearer view of Everest itself and forms one of the itinerary’s major highlights.
Where will I stay?
You will stay in hotels in Kathmandu and teahouses during the trek. Mountain teahouses provide practical accommodation, but facilities become simpler as the route gains altitude. Hot showers, device charging and Wi-Fi may carry additional fees.
What will I need to carry?
Porters carry the group’s main trekking luggage at a ratio of one porter for every two guests. You will carry a daypack containing water, extra layers, rain protection, snacks, sun protection and personal essentials.
What happens if the Lukla flight is delayed?
Mountain weather can delay or cancel flights. The itinerary includes a contingency day in Kathmandu to reduce the risk that a disruption affects your international departure. Further changes may still be necessary.
What insurance do I need?
Choose a policy that explicitly covers trekking to at least 5,545 metres, medical care and emergency evacuation. Standard travel insurance may exclude high-altitude trekking, so check the policy wording carefully.
Do I need a visa for Nepal?
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and may change. Check current requirements with the Nepal Department of Immigration and the relevant embassy or consulate before travelling.
Can I book a private room?
A single-room supplement is available for the hotel stays for an additional $180. Teahouse accommodation remains subject to availability along the route.
