Climb Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route
Trek through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert as you make your way toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres.
This 11-day Kilimanjaro expedition includes seven days on the Machame Route. The schedule provides time to recover after arriving in Tanzania and includes a visit to Chemka Hot Springs before the trek begins.
Experienced local mountain guides lead the climb. Expedition leader Chris accompanies the group from the airport through the mountain journey.
Dates: October 17–27, 2026
Location: Kilimanjaro and Moshi, Tanzania
Trip length: 11 days
Mountain trek: Seven days
Route: Machame Route
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Group size: Maximum of 12
Price: $3,680
Follow a seven-day route to Uhuru Peak
The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the south before traversing beneath the mountain’s southern ice fields.
Over seven days, you will move through distinct ecological zones and sleep at progressively higher camps. The route includes an acclimatization hike to Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres before descending to Barranco Camp.
The summit attempt begins around midnight from Barafu Camp. You will climb toward the crater rim in darkness, then continue to Uhuru Peak if the guides, conditions and your health allow.
Kilimanjaro reaches 5,895 metres and is the highest point in Africa. Altitude makes the journey demanding even for fit hikers.
Prepare with guidance before departure
The expedition includes pre-trip support through a group chat. You can ask questions about training, equipment and preparation before travelling.
You will receive a detailed packing list, and rental equipment is available if you do not own every item required. Ask which rental items involve an additional charge before booking.
Preparation should begin well before departure. Build your endurance through regular walking and hiking, preferably on hills and uneven ground. Train while carrying the daypack you expect to use on the mountain.
Travel with an experienced support team
Local mountain guides manage the climb, monitor the group and make daily decisions about pace and safety.
The team also includes porters and camp staff who transport shared equipment, establish camps and prepare meals. Chris personally accompanies the group throughout the expedition.
The booking includes Kilimanjaro National Park and rescue fees, along with emergency oxygen. These measures support the expedition’s safety plan, but they cannot remove the risks associated with altitude or guarantee that every participant will reach the summit.

Transfer to Machame Gate and complete the national park registration process.
The trek begins through montane rainforest. Your mountain team will establish camp before you arrive.

Day 5: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Hiking time: Approximately five to seven hours
Accommodation: Camping at Barranco Camp
Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin by climbing the Barranco Wall. The route then crosses a series of ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp.

This is the expedition’s longest and most demanding day.

Day 10: Recover in Moshi
Spend the day resting at the hotel and recovering from the climb.
The unhurried day also leaves some flexibility in the schedule after the mountain portion of the trip.
Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi
Day 11: Depart Tanzania
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home.
You can also arrange additional time in Tanzania independently if you plan to continue your travels.
A flexible mountain itinerary
Weather, trail conditions, altitude and the health of the group may affect the itinerary.
The guides may change the pace, route, departure times or activities when conditions require it. They may also ask a participant to stop ascending or descend if continuing would create an unacceptable risk.
Reaching Uhuru Peak can never be guaranteed. A safe descent takes priority over completing the summit.
Frequently asked questions
How high is Mount Kilimanjaro?
Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 metres, or 19,341 feet, above sea level. It is the highest point in Africa.
Do I need mountaineering experience?
The itinerary follows a trekking route rather than a technical climbing route. However, the altitude, consecutive hiking days, cold conditions and long summit day make the expedition physically demanding.
Previous multi-day hiking experience will help you prepare.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be able to hike for several hours on consecutive days and complete a structured training program before departure.
Fitness cannot prevent altitude illness, but physical preparation helps you manage the effort required throughout the trek.
Is reaching the summit guaranteed?
No. Weather, altitude, illness and individual response can prevent a summit attempt or require an early descent.
The guides will decide whether you can safely continue. Their decision takes precedence over a personal goal of reaching the summit.
What happens if altitude affects me?
Tell a guide immediately if you develop a headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, breathing difficulty or other symptoms.
The team will assess your condition and decide whether you should rest, stop ascending or descend. Emergency oxygen is available, but oxygen does not replace descent when descent is medically necessary.
Where will we sleep?
The expedition includes hotel accommodation in Moshi and tented camps on Kilimanjaro.
Ask the practitioner whether hotel rooms and mountain tents are shared and whether private arrangements are available for an additional charge.
Are meals included?
Meals are included during the activity days. Ask the practitioner which meals you will need to purchase during the hotel and travel portions of the trip.
What equipment will I need?
You will receive a detailed packing list covering boots, clothing, sleeping equipment and personal items.
Some equipment can be rented. Confirm availability, sizing and rental charges before travelling.
What is the maximum group size?
The expedition accepts a maximum of 12 participants.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes. Personal travel insurance is not included. Ask the practitioner what medical treatment, evacuation, high-altitude trekking and cancellation coverage your policy must provide.
Where does the expedition begin?
The trip begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Airport transfers included in the itinerary take you between the airport and Moshi.
